Keynote Address

From Start Line to Summit:  Navigating Decisions with Resilience and Trust

In travel insurance, we work at the intersection of uncertainty and support — helping people through some of their most challenging moments. In this session, Dr. Shaunna Burke draws on her own lived experiences climbing Everest to explore how trust, adaptability, and resilience are built when the pressure is on. Through engaging stories and practical insights, she’ll help us reflect on the “moments that matter” in our own roles — and how we can lead, adapt, and support others with authenticity and purpose, especially when it matters most.

Shaunna Burke, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Leeds, UK, whose research focuses on how exercise and mind-set help people cultivate resilience in the face of cancer. With a Master’s and PhD degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Ottawa, she has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles, funded by numerous research grants.

Before turning to mountaineering, Shaunna was an elite Alpine Ski Racer, representing Canada internationally, earning a U.S. collegiate skiing scholarship, and being named an Academic All-American for three consecutive years. An accomplished mountaineer, she became the second Canadian woman to summit Mount Everest and was featured in Discovery Channel’s award-winning miniseries Ultimate Survival: Everest (2004). She has also climbed Mount Elbrus (Russia), Mount Aconcagua (Argentina), Island Peak and Lobuche East (Nepal), and completed the Mont Blanc traverse (Italy to France)—each climb reflecting the same theme central to her work: pushing through discomfort to discover new strength.

Diagnosed with incurable breast cancer in 2024, Shaunna turned her mission into one of resilience and purpose. In 2025 she ran the Everest Marathon and climbed Lobuche East, raising vital funds for cancer charity. Her journey was captured in a feature documentary by Saga Media Film, and in spring 2026, she plans to return to Everest to attempt the summit—proving that even with incurable cancer, the climb continues.

Today, Shaunna is a sought-after motivational speaker, inspiring audiences across corporate, academic, and public sectors with her unique blend of science, adventure, and resilience—showing how physical and psychological strength can be cultivated even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
